Sri Krishnan Temple (a.k.a Sri Krishna Temple), on Waterloo Street was established in 1870 on the very same site when Hanuman Beem Singh set up an idol of Sri Krishna under a banyan tree. It is the only South Indian Hindu temple in Singapore dedicated exclusively to Sri Krishna and his consort Rukmini. As Sri Krishnan Temple is located near to the Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, it also receives many Chinese Buddhist devotees who simply walk over and light joss sticks. Other than serving the religious needs of the Hindu community, Sri Krishnan temple is also a harmonious symbol of the multi-cultural and multi-religious society in Singapore. The photograph is a front view of the entrance to the temple. Sculpture above the entrance depicts a scene from a Hindu epic. The figures in relief are brightly painted. A man stands in front of the temple. A portable iron barrier separates the temple's entrance from what looks like a metal table, on which can be seen an urn with joss sticks. An umbrella on a stand shelters the urn. Title devised by Library staff.
