This a 2003 photograph which depicts a close up angle view of the colourful gopura at the entrance of Sri Dhanaayuthanpani or Sri Thandayuthapani or Sri Thendayuthapani Hindu temple off Tank Road in Singapore. A gopura is a monumental tower, usually ornate at the entrance of a Hindu temple. It is a typical prominent feature of the Hindu temples of the Dravidian style and are topped by the kalasam, a bulbous stone finial. The Shaivite temple is dedicated to the six-faced Lord Subramaniam (Lord Muruga) and is one of the Singapore Hindu community’s most important temples. The statues of the Hindu idols and deities which decorate the gopura are characteristic of Hindu architecture and the temple is striking in its many pastel colours. Title devised by Library staff.
