This is a photograph showing an exterior side view of the 75 feet tall RAJAGOPURAM of the Sri Thandayuthapani or Thendayuthapani Hindu temple off Tank Road in Singapore. A gopura is a monumental tower, usually ornate at the entrance of a Hindu temple. It is a typical prominent feature of the Hindu temples of the Dravidian style and are topped by the kalasam, a bulbous stone finial. Also known as the Chettiar Hindu Temple, the Thendayuthapani Hindu temple was built in 1859 and later rebuilt in 1983. The Shaivite temple is dedicated to the six-faced Lord Subramaniam (Lord Muruga) and is one of the Singapore Hindu community’s most important temples. The statues of the Hindu idols and deities which decorate the gopura are characteristic of Hindu architecture and the temple is striking in its many pastel colours. Banana leaves are used to decorate the entrance of the temple. Title devised by Library staff
