This photograph shows kavadis being carried by members of the Chettiar Community, outside the Sri Mariamman Temple in Chinatown, one day prior to Thaipusam. Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated mostly by the Tamil community during a full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (Jan/Feb). The kavadi comes in various shapes and sizes, of which the kavadis carried by two bearers are the Vel Kavadis. It is a portable altar, decorated with peacock feathers and attached to the devotee through spikes pierced into the skin, on the chest and back.
