If you are new and curious about writing poems, even if you do not consider yourself a poet, why not join us to try your hand at poetry?

This workshop lets you embark on a new journey to express yourself through the written word, either to write short poems of your own or collaborate in a group for a longer composition.

Workshop Outline:

1. Introduction to short poetry forms such as the haiku.

2. Hands-on: Writing haiku or short 4-line stanzas or poems.

3. Understanding the DuaTresPentaStep poetry form.

4. Merging stanzas into a longer collaborative poem.

5. Going with the flow!

About the Facilitator

Jennifer Leong (aka Soy Avocado) started writing poetry in 2021 to raise funds for charity. She created the 'DuaTresPentaStep' poetry form, which she attributes to divine inspiration. Her poem "Hills", written in this innovative style, earned her the Spirit of the Festival Award at the 2022 Frances Browne Literary Festival Multilingual Poetry Competition in Ireland. Her poem 'Orlando in Florida' was nominated for the 2025 Pushcart prize.

She loves collaborations, including across different art genres. Her spoken and written word has also surfaced in Singapore and overseas.

Poetry to her is more than fun wordplay as she believes in the power of poetry to lift the spirit of both poet and reader. As someone who advocates for hope and poetry’s accessibility to all, she often writes multilingual and multi-directional poetry. She believes there is a poet in each of us and has been facilitating workshops to encourage more people to engage in poetry writing.

About the "Slice of Life" Programme Series

Reading, writing and telling stories allow us to record, recollect and reflect upon our lived experiences that form the stories of our lives. The Slice of Life programme series invites you to engage and experiment with the written word in different forms, to celebrate how stories entertain and educate us in different ways.

This series include:

  1. Reading Programmes: Enhance your reading skills and discover new ways to engage with different reading materials.
  2. Story-Sharing Programmes: Learn the craft of sharing your own stories effectively and engagingly.
  3. Book launches and Meet-The-Author sessions: Draw inspiration from new or seasoned writers as they discuss their works and creative process.

You can share your stories with anyone who loves a good tale or keep your stories as cherished memories to read in future. Or, if you can simply be the avid reader you are to enjoy the stories of others. Everyone can enjoy a Slice of Life.
