Information About

I was born in Dairy Farm estate in 1987. Back then, Dairy Farm estate was a very new condominium, as you can see from the pictures. It was only completed in 1984 or 85 I think. My father and mother bought a unit there and moved out of my grandparents place near Henry Park sometime in 1985. Growing up, I recall the vast open spaces, and scenic backdrop of the Bukit Timah nature reserve at our doorstep. There was a small dirt trail leading from Dairy Farm estate to the nature reserve where I would go cycling with my neighbors and I used in the evenings. Back then, there were not many high-rise buildings. The tallest HDB flats were only about 20 stories tall. Compared to them, Dairy Farm estate was only about 9 stories tall. We lived in a four-room unit on the 7th floor. Because of the low-rise nature of the buildings, it complemented the rustic, country feel of the estate as we could enjoy the view of the nature reserve from our room windows. It felt as if we were living just beside nature, amidst the greenery. I remember an incident that happened when I was about 8 years old. A monkey had managed to climb into the kitchen of our neighbour’s apartment on the 6th floor. I didn’t see it happen because I was at school but my parents recounted the incident to me. People from the zoo had to be called in to remove the monkey. Since then we managed to convince the management to install window grilles and we made it a habit to shut the windows when we left the house. Our family eventually moved out of Dairy Farm estate in 1997, when I was 10.
