SSO performs first concert in the newly revamped Victoria Concert Hall

On 1 October 1980, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) performed its first concert at the newly redesigned Victoria Concert Hall, which was the new home of the SSO until 2002. Over 900 guests were specially invited to the performance, which featured compositions by Schubert, Beethoven and Ge Yan. The renovated Victoria Concert Hall elevated the orchestra's performances by bringing out a livelier acoustic and enhancing resonance for smaller orchestral ensembles. The venue was refurbished at the cost of $4 million. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sources: "FIRST NIGHT AT THE NEW VIC,” Straits Times, 2 October 1980, 1.; “Much to applaud musically,” Straits Times, 3 October 1980, 4.
