Abstract
This article provides a brief history of the National Library at Stamford Road as well as the new site at the historical Victoria Street. The site was once a nutmeg and betel-nut plantation. By the instructions of Sir Stamford Raffles' 'Town Plan', land was leased by auction, and leases had tenure of 999 years. A large portion of this land was formerly the private property of an enterprising merchant, Andrew Farquhar who in 1827, became first appointed Coroner in Singapore. Other property owners, buildings, street names, commerce and communities in the area are also mentioned.
