Abstract
Gioachino Rossini's opera L'italiana in Algeri (The Italian Girl in Algiers) marks a decisive turning point in the composer's oevre, the story of the headstrong Isabella, one of the most daring and independent female characters of her time, and Bey Mustafa, the macho who allows himself to be made a fool of by a woman, is his first full-length opera buffa.
