This photograph shows a street view of the dwellings and provision shop at the Changi Malay Settlement or Kampong Melayu. The Malay kampong house and provision shop are wooden structures with zinc roofs. The kampong house on the left is raised on stone stilts that provide an airy basement. The idyllic kampong scene is accentuated by the greenery around the buildings. The Malay Settlement became habitable by 1931 and came with roads and utilities. The housing lots were also reserved for Malays of pure descent. Title by Library staff. Description by Library staff.
