Portrait of Mr. Charles John Canning, the first Earl Canning. Fort Canning Hill in Singapore is named in his honour. Canning was appointed Governor-General of India in 1856 and became the first viceroy of India in 1858, when the power of government was transferred from the East India Company to the British crown. He was created Earl in 1859 and retired in 1862.
