This photograph shows three statues depicting the three Chinese gods, Fu, Lu, and Shou, also known as the Sanxing (three stars or constellations). In Chinese folklore, Fu (Good Fortune) is generally depicted in scholar's dress holding a scroll and often conflated with Caishen (God of Wealth). In the middle, Lu (Prosperity) is usually depicted in the dress of a mandarin or imperial scholar and is associated with prosperity, rank, and influence. Shou (Longevity) is depicted as an old man with a domed forehead holding a peach which symbolises immortality, and/or carrying a gourd filled with the elixir of life. Title devised by Library staff.
