He was Minister of State for Home Affairs (Mar 1985-May 1986), Community Development (Mar 1985-Feb 1986) and later Communications and Information (May 1985-Feb 1986); Acting Minister for Community Development (Feb-Dec 1986); Minister for Community Development (Jan 1987-1991), Foreign Affairs (Sep 1988-Jan 1994) and Home Affairs (Jan 1994-Oct 2010); Deputy Prime Minister (Sep 2005-May 2011); Co-ordinating Minister for National Security (Nov 2010-May 2011); People's Action Party Member of Parliament for Kuo Chuan (Dec 1984-Aug 1988), Toa Payoh GRC (Aug 1988-Aug 1991), Thomson GRC (Aug 1991-Dec 1996), and Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC (Dec 1996-to date); and Deputy Chairman of People's Association (1992-2006); Chairman of Board of Directors of Chinese Development Assistance Council (1992-2004); Member (1987-1992), Second Assistant Secretary-General (1992-2004) and later First Assistant Secretary-General of People's Action Party Central Executive Committee (2004-2011); Leader of House in Singapore Parliament (1987-Mac 2007).
