He was Vice-President (1968-1970) and Executive Vice-President (1970-1978) of the Development Bank of Singapore or DBS; Senior Minister of State for National Development (1978); Minister for Foreign Affairs (1980-1988), Culture (1981-1984), Community Development (1984-1986), National Development (Jan 1987-Aug 1992), and Trade and Industry (Dec 1992-Jan 1994); Chairman of the Singapore Airlines (Mac 1996-May 1998), Temasek Holdings (Sep 1996-to date), and DBS Group Holdings Limited (1999-2005); Director (Jul 1985-1996) and later Chairman (Sep 1992-Oct 1996) of the Singapore Labour Foundation; Life Trustees (since 1991) and President of the Singapore Indian Development Association or SINDA (Mac 1996-Mac 2002); Senior Adviser of Nuri Holdings (1994-1997); and PAP Member of Parliament for Kallang (1976-1991) and Toa Payoh GRC (1991-1994).
