This is a view of the single-storey Straits and Federated Malay States Government Medical School at Sepoy Lines. Established on 3 July 1905, it was the first medical school in Singapore, and occupied the former buildings of Female Lunatic Asylum. It was declared open by Sir John Anderson, Governor of the Straits Settlements, on 28 September 1905. In 1913, it was renamed "King Edward VII Medical School" and in 1921 as "King Edward VII College of Medicine". Later, the college building was demolished and a new three-storey building was constructed on the grounds of Outram Road General Hospital. The foundation stone was laid on 6 September 1923. Designed by Government Architect, Major Percy H. Keys, it was declared open by Sir Laurence Guillemard, Governor of the Straits Settlements, on 1 February 1926. It served as Faculty of Medicine Building of University of Malaya, University of Singapore and National University of Singapore between 1949 and 1985. After restoration and renovation works, it became home to headquarters of Ministry of Health (Jul 1987-to date) and Academy of Medicine (1987-2001). Today, it is known as "College of Medicine Building". On 2 December 2002, it was gazetted as a national monument by Preservation of Monuments Board. Title devised by Library staff.
