She was a student at Singapore Chinese Girls' School (1961-1971) and Tanjong Katong Girls' School (1971-1972); Executive Secretary of United Workers of Electronics and Electrical Industries; Assistant Director (Research Unit) (1989), Assistant Director (Legal) (1990), Director of Women’s Development Secretariat and Director of Legal Services Department at National Trade Union Congress or NTUC (1992-2001); Assistant Secretary-General (May 1999-2007) and Deputy Secretary-General of NTUC Executive Committee (2007-2011); and Secretary of Singapore Institute of Labour Studies (1990-1995). She is Minister of State for Community Development, Youth and Sports (May 2011-to date); People's Action Party Member of Parliament for Jurong GRC (Nov 2001-to date); and Member of PAP Central Executive Committee (2004-to date).
