Photograph

Information About

This photograph, taken around 1890, shows a view of the Singapore River upstream from Read Bridge. The building on the right with circular arches stood on the corner of Fisher Street. Once the centre of trade, commercial and economic activities, the Singapore River is of great historical importance in the development of early Singapore. The bumboats and sampans seen on the river were the main form of transportation used in ferrying goods and cargoes between the shophouses and godowns along the river bank and the large shipping vessels in early days. Title devised by Library staff. Information contributed by Richard Hale. Date of creation estimated.
