This book traced the history of the attempts by the British rulers of Singapore colony to govern the Malay and migrant Chinese population. The author examined the success and failures of the principles and methods of governance applied by the British rulers on multi-racial Singapore during the period when the Malays' loyalty was towards the Malay royalty and aristocracy connected with the Riau-Johore Empire and the Chinese who were influenced by the revolutionaries and reformists from turbulent China at that time.
