Mayflower Primary School : gratitude to teacher

Recollection

by Huang Qian Qin, Singapore. Ministry of Education

During my primary school days, my parents went through a divorce and my father had to take care of myself and two other brothers. My family was poor and my father had difficulties making ends meet every month. I had no money to pay for my fees and every time the teacher needed to collect any money for any books/enrichment courses, I could not afford to pay and would find excuses. But I remember this particular form teacher who was especially caring, who did not scold me, but helped me. She helped me to settle many monetary issues and allowed me to come to school without having to be worried about fees/payments. She understood my situation at home and was always there to encourage not only me but my father as well. I could really feel that she went the extra mile for me and my family. Her actions deeply touched me and she is a role model that I look up to even till today. Her actions remind me that I can also touch the lives of my students in the same way, and any help I can offer to students who are in need can change and make an impact in their lives. Sadly, this wonderful teacher passed away at quite a young age due to cancer. But what she did and how she helped me will always be in my memory and will always guide me in my teaching career. A good teacher does not only teach, but shows care and concern. Showing care always touches the student in one way or another.
