St Hilda's Primary Sch

Recollection

by Tan, Hui Xian, Singapore. Ministry of Education

I remember my school days when my discipline mistress walk around the school with thick and thin canes in her hand. Even my Chinese teacher holds a metre rule in his hand, not for curriculum purposes but more for hitting the board and tables to make students pay attention. At that time, teachers were Kings and Queens. Pupils were really obedient, handed in work on time. I, for one, didn't dare to make mistakes for fear of being scolded or hit. My art teacher was the one feared most by all. She would grab students by the shirt and sometimes slam us against the whiteboard when students did not bring or hand in homework. Though Art wasn't very enjoyable, we will make it a point to complete our work. Discipline in school nowadays is very different from the past. Each has its pros and cons.
