There was a dairy farm already in the 1950s

Recollection

Mr S. Rajamanickam interviewed by Chan Kim Yin in May 2018 Dairy Farm with Australian Cows & cowsheds operated on a hill in the 1950s There was a dairy farm already (in the 1950s). From the corner, you could see all the Australian cows grazing. They were moved from one area to another to let the grass grow. The Dairy Farm road where the houses were… we used to walk in there and they had all these structures where they used to milk the cows. But from the corner of my house, you could see the cows grazing. In the evening, you could hear the tinkling of the bells. Yes, they had the bells around the neck. And later, then the government had other ideas, they took away all the cows. They took it to Tangkak at Johor in the 70s. If you were at Mrs Teo’s house on Chestnut Close, you could see the cows on the other side of the stream. It was not a big stream but a windy one. Kingfishers used to make their nest there so there were lots of birds. They would make their homes on the banks. You could see their cows – 300 or so. I think Singapore Cold Storage owned the farms; yes, SCS butter. I think they were selling it to the factories. After that, it became a tobacco farm; then they were growing grass – turfing. If you wanted to buy grass, you’d go there. The current condo is where the cow sheds were. And the hill that we see was where the cows grazed – a very wide area. The hill was good quality grass for the cows. No goats; only cows. After the Dairy Farm stopped, someone bought the area and they were growing tobacco – a large area! After the tobacco came, they were selling grass. You could hear the bells ringing. Oh yes, you can stand at the corner of my house, look there, and you could see the cows. You couldn’t smell anything; not this far. But it you went to the present Dairy Farm estate, yes, you could smell it.
