Commisioner Eric Yap assumed command of SCDF on 2 February 2012, in a Change of Command Parade held at the National Service Training Institute.
The Guest of Honour-cum-Officiating Officer for the parade was Mr Tan Tee How, the Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs. A heavy downpour earlier in the day only served to cool the heat and usher in a comfortable and memorable evening, a milestone event witnessed by guests from the ministry headquarters, Heads of Departments, strategic partners and SCDF personnel.
Neatly lined up for the night were rows of stoic SCDF personnel in both ceremonial and operational uniforms, with shining emergency apliances behind them to both land an aura to the ceremony as well as showcase SCDF's operational efficacy. The ceremony hit a high note when Mr Tan presented Comr Eric Yap with the SCDF Command Mace and the Appointment Letter. Comr then solemnly recited his Declaration of Oath with his right hand holding onto the State Flag, signifying his allegiance and commitment to faithfully discharge the duties of his office.
In his inaugural address as Commissioner, Comr Eric Yap acknowledged both the professionalisim exhibited by SCDF personnel and the strong support of our ORNSmen, strategic partners and volunteers. He also shed some light on the horizon, with new upcoming fire stations for enhanced operational coerage and an intensified community emergency preparedness outreach effort. Operational efficiency and heightened community awareness on emergency preparedness are both important thrusts by the Force to contribute to a safe and secure Singapore.
