iremembermySchoolDays - Nanyang Girls' High School (NYGH)

Recollection

by Goh, Ying Hui, Singapore Memory Project

When I stepped through the doors of Nanyang 4 years ago, I was a bundle of nerves, unsure of whether I would ever find my footing in this large place which seemed so alien to me. Would I fit in? Would I struggle academically? These were some of my key concerns and as I followed my Peer Support Leaders (PSLs)up the stairs to my new classroom to get acquainted with my new classmates, my stomach couldn't stop churning in anxiety. My first day wasn't the worst day yet, for I got to learn the ropes around the school and my PSls turned out to be incredibly nice and friendly people. I left school feeling a little more confident about starting the next chapter of my life here, and fervently hoped that the next few years of my life would be more smooth-sailing than rocky-road. I was right and I was wrong. I have struggled both socially and academically and many times found myself on the verge of break down (and eventually do). The past 4 years have been an emotional roller coaster and I must admit, I have made many, many mistakes along the way. But then again, my life in Nanyang was not without moments of joy either. I have made more friends than I thought I could ever could made. They have been my pillar of support, a shoulder for me to cry on and nothing beats being able to walk into the future safely, knowing someone will always have your backing. I will remember the times my friends from Infocomm Club and I spent walking to the bus stop after CCA, talking and laughing about everything under the sun like nothing else could matter any more. I will also remember my Lifeskill camps, the first two, a lesson in bonding and the importance of solidarity and teamwork, the third, a lesson in resilence and knowing what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and the fourth, a time of realising what makes you beautiful and being able to transform from girls to swans. I will remember the secondary school milestones I made, my first ever medal at the Singapore Junior Chemistry Olympiad 2011 and my first CCA achievement at Robocup Singapore 2012. I will too remember the school events I can say I was a part of, from witnessing the Youth Olympic Games torch lighting ceremony at Founder's Day Funfair'10 to being able to watch the full-dress rehearsal of the 95th Anniversary Musical under the stars. People say adolescence can be the toughest years of your life, but they can be the most memorable too. My days in Nanyang are numbered. As I get ready to cross the bridge to embark on the next stage of my education in junior college, thank you, Nanyang for the memories. It has been my honour to have had the privilege of being part of this big Nanyang family.
