Cheng San Public Library to undergo revamp from Oct 2025

Library experience to be enhanced and expanded

Singapore, 3 March 2025 — Cheng San Public Library will be closed for revamp from 1 October 2025. Patrons can look forward to many new experiences at the revamped library, including a bigger space for reading and learning, programmes and services to stimulate the mind in new ways, and with design features inspired from the sights and scenes in Hougang.

The library will also be expanded. When it reopens in the first half of 2027, the library, which is currently on the third floor, will be relocated to the fifth floor. This allows the library to occupy a larger space, growing from its current 1,467 sqm to about 2,500 sqm. More details of the revamped library will be shared later.

The library’s revamp is part of the National Library Board’s (NLB) ongoing efforts to systematically rejuvenate our existing libraries. It is also being carried out in tandem with Frasers Centrepoint Trust’s Asset Enhancement Initiative for Hougang Mall.

NLB’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Ng Cher Pong, said: “The library has been serving the community well for more than 28 years and many have fond memories and experiences there. We will work closely with partners and the community to shape it, and develop a new space that will offer an enhanced experience for patrons of all ages.”

Cheng San Public Library will continue to operate till 30 September 2025. During the revamp, patrons can explore alternative services that will enable them to continue reading, learning, and discovery. These include:

  1. Browse-n-Borrow –NLB will set up a Browse-n-Borrow kiosk in Hougang Mall, which will enable patrons to select and browse physical books at the kiosk, before checking it out using a library-compliant card or the NLB Mobile app. The Browse-n-Borrow alternative service can hold up to 550 physical books and 100 reservations at any time.
  2. NLB’s Resources – Patrons can access NLB’s collections via its Mobile app (https://mobileapp.nlb.gov.sg/). Hundreds of thousands of books, periodicals, and other publications can be searched, reserved and borrowed via the NLB Mobile app, which can be downloaded from the Google Play or Apple App store
  3. Borrow-n-Deliver – Patrons can enjoy the convenience of this delivery service, where they can select up to four library items, including books, magazines, and audio-visual materials, which are available and currently not on loan via NLB’s e-catalogue, to be delivered to their homes (a fee of $8.72 with GST).
  4. Nearby libraries – Patrons can visit other libraries in the vicinity, such as Punggol Regional Library, Sengkang Public Library and Serangoon Public Library to continue enjoying NLB's services and resources. Library materials can also be returned at these other libraries during the revamp at Cheng San Public Library.
