Starting with a sketch of the decline and fall of the Dutch East India Company, the author describes the physical geography of Java, the origin of the natives, comparing the three main races, namely, the Javans, Malayus and Bugis, and the foreign settlers, all aspects of agriculture, manufactures and handicrafts, domestic and foreign commerce, character of the inhabitants of Java, court ceremonies with details of rank and title, festivals, language, literature and the fine arts.
