About the Collection:

The Southeast Asian Collection was set-up in 1964 primarily as a reference and research collection. The Collection is a valuable source of materials for historical research, particularly for the nineteenth and twentieth centuries covering fiction, anthropology, religion, law, linguistics, the arts, social sciences, humanities, science and technology. The publications are in English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil and a small number in the European languages of former colonial powers, mostly Dutch and French.

Works on Indonesia and Malaysia form the largest items with a good coverage on Brunei Darussalam, Khmer Republic, East Timor, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. The Collection complements similar collections in the libraries of ISEAS and the National University of Singapore (NUS).

The Collection focuses on the following areas:

  • History : early travelogues of the region, periods of colonial occupation, World War Two period and inter-regional developments to the present day
  • Literature : all forms of literary works by Malaysian and Indonesian authors ; autobiography, essays and critical writing about specific authors and themes in Malaysian and Indonesian literature particularly in relation to Singapore.
  • Politics and government : political condition and development, government policies, key political parties & special interest groups, regional relations
  • People and culture : ethnic communities including early immigrant communities, biographies, customs, costume, etiquette, folklore, religious rites and practices of the ethnic communities
